Name John Last (Admitted 1976) Senior Partner
Experience


Our senior partner, John was born and raised in Derbyshire. He joined Broadbents in February 1973 and was admitted as a solicitor in December 1976. John was made a partner on March 1st 1978 and became senior partner on July 1st 1994.


Over the past 20 years he has specialised in criminal law defence and regularly attends police stations and magistrates courts. During that time he has advised thousands of clients during investigation into all categories of offence from murder down and still continues to do so. John also represents those who have been charged in the magistrate’s court and has conducted hundreds of trials during his career.


In February 2008 John gained his Higher Court Rights and is now able to represent clients before the Crown Court. He principally works out of our Heanor, Derby and Alfreton offices but also represents clients before the Nottingham, Mansfield and Chesterfield courts.

Since 1989 John has been the President of the Derbyshire Tennis Association.

Name Paul James (Admitted 1985) Partner
Experience

Paul heads up the firm’s private client department having responsibility for property, business, wills and probate matters. Paul specialises in catering for the needs of small businesses covering such matters as partnership, private company and employment law, business sales and purchases, commercial property sales and purchases and commercial leases, while still retaining an interest in criminal work in his capacity as a police station and court Duty solicitor.

Paul works out of the firm's Alfreton and Kirkby in Ashfield branches but will happily meet prospective clients at any of the firm's other four offices.

Paul joined Broadbents from university in 1983, completed his training here, and was admitted in 1985.
He joined the Partnership in 1989.

Name Philip Bloore (Admitted 1977) Partner
Experience

Philip was admitted as a solicitor in 1977, having served his articles with a firm of solicitors in North Staffordshire. In 1978 he decided to specialise in criminal law and joined the Derbyshire Prosecutions Department. During the next six years he obtained a good grounding in all aspects of criminal law, prosecuting on behalf of the Police and Trading Standards in all the Magistrates courts in Derbyshire.


Phil was persuaded to make a return to private practice in 1984, where he has remained since, defending clients in every type of criminal and motoring cases in the Magistrates courts and briefing counsel/advocates in the Crown Court and High Court. Phil also does police station call out attendance around Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.


In the past eight years Philip has been a legal advisor for the Derbyshire Probation Service, advising the service in all aspects of court proceedings.


Philip joined Broadbents as a partner in 2002 and works out of our Chesterfield branch.

Name Quentin Robbins (Admitted November 1989) Partner
Experience

Quentin heads our team of solicitor-advocates. As such he often appears at the Crown Courts in Derby and Nottingham. As well as dealing with the most serious criminal cases, Quentin frequently appears in the family courts in public law proceedings involving children and care. He is also a qualified Duty solicitor

Admitted in 1989, Quentin joined Broadbents in November 1993 and was invited to the Partnership in 1995.

In 2007 Quentin was the President of the Derby and District Law Society.

Name Mark R Stocks (Admitted October 1998) Partner
Experience

Mark is the Partner responsible for our Sutton-in-Ashfield branch and oversees all of the firms cases at Nottingham Crown Court and Mansfield Magistrates Court. He is a defence solicitor and appears regularly at the Magistrates Court in Mansfield where he deals with all aspects of criminal litigation for the most serious and least serious of crimes. His specialisations are drug offences, sexual offences and cases invloving mentally disordered offenders. He is a qualified Duty solicitor and advises suspects at the police station.

Admitted in 1998, he joined Broadbents in January 2000. He was invited to join the Partnership in July 2004..

Name Peter Rusbridge (Admitted 1990) Partner
Experience

Peter has been qualified since 1990 and joined Broadbents in the summer of 1994. In July 2000 he became a partner in the firm.

Peter heads up the family department working primarily out of the firms Alfreton branch, but also advises clients out of our Derby, Kirkby and Chesterfield branches.


Peter is a member of Resolution and is also on the Law Society family panel. He carries out both privately and publicly funded work covering most areas of family law.

Name Lesley Goodman (Admitted October 2003)
Experience

Lesley is one of the firm's solicitor-advocates. This means she can act for clients in both the Crown and Magistrates Courts. Lesley currently appears for our clients at the Derby and Nottingham Crown Courts and also Derby Magistrates Court. She is based at our Derby branch and specialises in all aspects of criminal law. As a Duty solicitor, she regularly advises suspects at police stations and is a part of our 24 hour response team.

Lesley was admitted in 2003 and joined Broadbents in January 2005. She became an associate solicitor in July 2008

In July 2009 Lesley was invited to join the partnership which she accepted.

Name Michael Little (Admitted July 2005)
Experience

Michael is a defence solicitor based at our Sutton-in-Ashfield branch. He regularly appears at Mansfield Magistrates Court and defends in all types of criminal case. He represents those appearing in the Magistrates and Youth courts, and those who are under arrest at police stations. Michael is a qualified Duty solicitor and is part of our 24 hour response team.

Admitted in July 2005, he joined Broadbents in January 2004 and finished his training here.

In July 2009 Michael became an associate of the firm.

Name Hilary Barrett (Admitted November 1992)
Experience

Hilary qualified as a solicitor in November 1992 and joined Broadbents in the December of that year. Hilary mainly deals with family work and matrimonial issues but also does police station call out attendance. She is based out of our Heanor, Sutton and Alfreton branches.


Hilary is also a fluent speaker of French and German.

Name Stacey Whyte (Admitted March 2005)
Experience

Stacey is a defence solicitor who deals with all aspects of advocacy in the Magistrates Court. She is based at our Derby branch and appears often at Derby Magistrates Court. Stacey is a Duty solicitor and regularly advises people who are under arrest and detained at police stations. She is part of our 24 hour response team. Although able to deal with all areas of criminal litigation Stacey has a keen interest in defending cases involving allegations of domestic abuse.

Stacey was admitted in 2005 and joined Broadbents in June of the same year.

Name Matt Evans (Admitted October 2007)
Experience

Matt is a defence solicitor based at our Chesterfield branch. He appears regularly at the Magistrates and Youth courts in Chesterfield, Mansfield and Derby dealing with all aspects of criminal work. Matt is part or our out of hours response team and also represents people at the police station as well as court.

Matt was admitted in October 2007 having joined Broadbents in July 2005 and completed his training with us.

The elder daughter of our senior partner Becky is a solicitor working in the criminal and family departments.

Becky joined the firm in June 2003 after obtaining a degree in politics from Lancaster University. Initially joining the firm on a six month career break Becky enjoyed the work so much she decided to stay on and is now well on the way to qualifying as a solicitor, obtaining a graduate diploma in law from Nottingham Trent University in June 2007 and completed her legal practice course in June 2009.


Becky works from our Heanor, Derby and Alfreton branches.

Becky qualified on the 15th October 2009.

Name Kamaljit Johal
Experience

Kam is a paralegal, who joined the firm in 1989. Having trained within the firm Kam is now the longest standing member of our Crown Court team. She works out of the Heanor and Sutton branches and also conducts prison visits for our clients, whilst also attending cases at Nottingham, Derby and Leicester Crown Courts.

Name Richard Pell
Experience

Richard joined Broadbents in August 2003 as a crown court clerk working out of our Chesterfield branch. He deals with a wide range of preparation for cases which make their way to the Crown Court, including prosecution matters on behalf of the National Probation Service and defence matters for serious crimes. Richard deals with matters that a listed at Derby, Nottingham and Leicester Crown Courts.


During his time at Broadbents he has gained experience in virtually all aspects of indictable offences and general Crown Court procedures.

Name Aisling (Ash) Wall
Experience Ash is one of our criminal department clerks and is based at our Derby office. She is responsible for preparing both Crown Court and Magistrate's Court cases for trial and assisting the advocates who will conduct the cases in Court. She will interview witnesses, pursue defence line of enquiry, and assist in securing evidence which might help the defence at trial.

Ash joined Broadbents in November 2007 having graduated in law in 2003 and completed her legal practice course in 2007. She is currently working towards becoming an accredited police station representative which she hopes will be completed sometime in 2009.
Police Station Representative
Name Angela Baldwin
Experience Angela is an accredited police station representative with over four years experiance in this field. She advises people at the police station who are under arrest. She is part of our out of hours response team which is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. She is based at our Heanor office but represents clients at police stations throughout Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.

Angela graduated with a degree in law in 2001 and obtained a masters degree from the University of Leicester the following year. She is currently working towards completing her Legal Practice Course with a view to qualification as a solicitor.

She joined Broadbents in April 2009.
